Turner Broadcasting Salutes African-American Achievement at Third Annual. Trumpet Awards

Baseball Hall of Fame Hank Aaron, children's rights advocate Marian Wright Edleman and star of stage, screen and television Diahann Carroll are among those being honored at Turner Broadcasting System, Inc,'s third annual Trumpet Awards Dinner held on Monday, February 27, at 7 p.m. in the Omni Hotel at CNN Center in Atlanta.

The Trumpet Awards saluted the outstanding achievements of seven African-American men and women who have distinguished themselves in the fields of education, journalism, social activism, sports and entertainment.

Noted actress Shari Belafonte and Representative Kweisi Mfume, hosted the event.

'The honorees at this event are representative of the countless number of African-Americans who have succeeded and continue to succeed in America despite racism and injustice,' says Xernona Clayton, TBS, Inc. corporate vice president for urban affairs and Trumpet awards creator. The Trumpet Awards presented an opportunity for Turner Broadcasting to spot-light and 'trumpet' the outstanding legacy of contributions and accomplishments African-Americans have made in the building of America.

Diahann Carroll has been recognized as one of America's major performing talents, Carroll's versatility in the entertainment industry has been displayed on stage, screen and television, her most recent film work was in 1993 in Robert Townsend's the Five Heartbeats. Some of her other credits include Paris Blues, Carmen Jones, I know Why the Caged Bird Sings, Hurry Sundown, The Spilt, Porgy & Bess and Claudine.

Ms. Carroll is a graduate of the Ophelia De Vore School of Charm, New York City.
